Merriam-Webster declared "w00t" the new word of the year for 2007.

That's really lame; "w00t" has been around for well over a decade.

Here's a better list of new words, or at least new phrases --

NYT: All We Are Saying.

"Wide stance -- to be hypocritical or to express two conflicting points of view."

Washinton Post: The Old Ba' Game. Residents of a Scottish Town Feel the Pull (and Push) of a Chaotic, Centuries-Old Holiday Event.

"If you're tough enough to survive in this old Viking territory, in a frostbitten town of around 6,000 bordered by whitecapped seas, then you don't worry about relaxing on Christmas and New Year's Day. You put on steel-toe boots and a rugby shirt and walk downtown to the almost 900-year-old St. Magnus Cathedral, ready for hell."

Is it Christmas?

AP: Officials Pick Mattoon for FutureGen.

"The $1.8 billion plant known as FutureGen, which would store carbon dioxide deep underground, is expected to bring hundreds of jobs to this central Illinois town and will be built on several hundred acres.... [T]he FutureGen Alliance would be in Mattoon Wednesday to begin seismic surveys of 16 square miles of land. Officials have said the plant is expected to be operating by 2012, and said Tuesday that they hope to begin construction by July 2009."

Edit 2010.07.10 -- I see a lot of traffic associated with this pic. There's a description from the photographer on the Getty Images site.

BBC: The US sub-prime crisis in graphics.

"The Bush administration is pushing the industry to renegotiate rather than repossess where possible, but mortgage companies are being overwhelmed by a tidal wave of cases."

AP: 'Death star galaxy' blasts its neighbor with radiation jet.

"Tyson said there are two main lessons to be learned from what the telescopes have found: ‘This is a reminder that you are not alone in the universe. You are not isolated. You are not an island.’"

"And ‘avoid black holes when you can.’"

Michael's Optical Illusions & Visual Phenomena: Motion Induced Blindness.

"In reality, the 3 yellow spots are continuously present, honest!"

Nature: Voyager 2 probe crosses interstellar boundary.

"Voyager 1 is currently nearly 10 billion miles from the Sun, travelling nearly a million miles a day. Voyager 2 is nearly 8 billion miles away, and moving just slightly slower."

Al Lowe's Humor Site: When Insults Had Class.

"He has no enemies, but is intensely disliked by his friends. -- Oscar Wilde"

Here's to going for it on fourth down --

Associated Press: LSU extends football coach Miles' contract to 2012.

> That man has given me about a dozen heart attacks this past fall.

U.S. Census Bureau: Frequently Occurring Surnames From Census 2000.

> Download "File B" and find your own name. "Kessinger" is 8566 on the list.
